China criticized the United States for imposing new unilateral sanctions against North Korea in a statement released Saturday, calling for stopping "such wrongdoings" that affect Chinese companies.

"The Chinese side firmly opposes the U.S. imposing unilateral sanctions and 'long-arm jurisdiction' on Chinese entities or individuals in accordance with its domestic laws," Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said in the statement.

On Friday, Washington announced its latest sanctions against Pyongyang, involving 28 vessels and 27 shipping and trading firms located, registered or flagged in North Korea, China and seven other economies in Asia, Africa and Latin America.

"We have lodged stern representations with the U.S. side over this, urging it to immediately stop such wrongdoings so as not to undermine bilateral cooperation in the relevant area," Geng said.

China has "comprehensively and strictly" implemented U.N. resolutions on North Korea, Geng said, adding if any infringement of the U.N. resolutions is spotted China will deal with it in accordance with domestic laws.
