A new train using rail cars produced by Japan's Hitachi Ltd. began service on Thursday in the mass transit system of Miami, Florida.

The stainless-steel rail cars are for Metrorail, Miami-Dade Transit's 40-kilometer-long dual-track, elevated rapid transit system linking Miami International Airport to downtown Miami and a suburban residential area.

Hitachi Rail USA Inc. is due to make a total of 136 rail cars by the end of 2019 to replace all the aging cars introduced in 1984 when the train system was launched.
