Japan secured a berth in the figure skating team event at the Pyeongchang Olympics, a source familiar with the matter said Wednesday.

Japan will be one of the 10 nations and regions allotted a spot in the three-day competition, after it claimed enough points to finish among the top 10 as ranked by the International Skating Union.

The ISU will decide the countries based on the results at last season's world championships and this season's Grand Prix events. The union is scheduled to announce the 10 competitors after the Dec. 7-10 Grand Prix Final.

If Japan qualifies as expected, it will be taking part in the team event for the second time. Japan finished fifth at the 2014 Sochi Games, where the teams event was held for the first time.

In the event, medals are awarded based on the sum of teams' scores in men's and women's singles, pairs and ice dancing.
