A volcano in southwestern Japan continued to erupt for a second day Thursday, with the plume rising about 2,000 meters above the crater, a government agency said.
Mt. Shinmoe, straddling the borders of Kagoshima and Miyazaki prefectures, erupted for the first time in six years early Wednesday, prompting the Japan Meteorological Agency to raise its volcanic alert level.
Ash falls were observed in at least three cities and one town in Miyazaki.
The 1,421-meter mountain last erupted in September 2011.
