The International Olympic Committee said Wednesday that Tokyo will work towards becoming carbon free during the four days of the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2020 Summer Olympics and Paralympics.

Tokyo Gov. Yuriko Koike announced the initiative Monday after an international meeting about global warming in Paris, emphasizing the importance to work to become a "fully sustainable city and to create a lasting Olympic legacy for future generations," according to the IOC website.

Tokyo is planning to take into account an emissions trading project in effect for large businesses in the capital, and seek donations from them to meet the objective.

The Japanese capital is estimated to emit a total of 720,000 tons of carbon dioxide during the four days. The Olympics is scheduled on July 24-Aug. 9, and the Paralympics on Aug. 25-Sept. 6.

During the meeting, the mayors of Paris and Los Angeles, which will host the 2024 and 2028 Games, respectively, agreed to work together in the areas of "sustainability, inclusiveness and innovation," said the IOC.
