Iraq declared in July it had regained control over Mosul from the Islamic State militant group, but a U.S.-based photo journalist found residents' efforts to rebuild the country's second-largest city still hampered by skirmishes.

During his visit from late July to early August, Yusuke Suzuki heard gunfire and witnessed a number of landmines and explosive devices remaining in the Old City district of Mosul, where people cannot walk around without police guard for fear of ambush by members of the group.

While the exact number of people who were killed or went missing in the fighting to take back control of the city from the militants is still unknown, a police squad member told Suzuki residents can hear the voices of people from beneath the rubble at night.
