Australia coach Ange Postecoglou on Wednesday named his 23 for the crunch World Cup qualifiers against Japan and Thailand, leaving out injured captain Mile Jedinak.

Postecoglou trimmed seven from the provisional squad he unveiled last week for the Aug. 31 Japan game at Saitama and the Socceroos' final Group B match, on Sept. 5 at home in Melbourne.

The 33-year-old Jedinak has not played for his club Aston Villa since April because of a lingering groin injury. His only recent appearance was in June, when Postecoglou's men beat Saudi Arabia in World Cup qualifying.

Australia are currently third in the group. They are one point behind leaders Japan and trail Saudi Arabia on goal difference, needing four points from the remaining two games to secure a top two finish and automatically qualify for Russia next year.

"Throughout this qualification campaign we have looked to evolve and improve from match to match," Postecoglou said in a statement. "I believe that the players that we have named today are ready for these two very important matches."

"Our focus is to get a positive result against Japan and then look to finish the group stage with a win on home soil in Melbourne against Thailand."

Postecoglou has picked just two uncapped players for this international window, goalkeeper Danny Vukovic and forward Awer Mabil.

Yokohama F Marinos defender Milos Degenek and former Urawa Reds center-half Matthew Spiranovic were included in the squad, which features three-time World Cup striker Tim Cahill and 2015 Asian Cup MVP Massimo Luongo.

Maty Ryan, who could be joined at Brighton by Japan winger Genki Haraguchi before the transfer window closes, is set to be in goal once again.
