Belgian soldiers shot a man suspected of attempting a suicide bombing Tuesday at Brussels Central Station, according to media reports.

The suspect was reportedly shot after setting off a small explosion. There were no other casualties. Police confirmed the attacker had died.

The station was evacuated, along with the nearby Grand Place central square, a major tourist attraction, according to the reports.

A Belgian federal prosecutor said the incident is considered a foiled "terrorist attack," according to the Associated Press. The suspect threatened train passengers and shouted "Allahu akbar," meaning "God is great" in Arabic, as he triggered a bomb vest or belt, The Daily Mail reported.

In March last year, attacks in Brussels airport and on the city's metro system killed 32 people. A Brussels-based Islamic State cell had launched an attack that killed 130 people in Paris four months earlier.

The Belgian capital is home to the headquarters of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization and the European Union.
