Toyota Motor Corp. said Friday it plans to sell boats using technology and design cues taken from its luxury Lexus car brand.

The automaker showed off a concept model, the Lexus Sport Yacht Concept, for the first time in Japan at an event in Tokyo. The roughly 13-meter long boat can accommodate eight people, with leather and wood furnishings and a body made of a carbon fiber-reinforced material used in racing cars.

With twin 5.0 liter V8 engines based on those used in Lexus cars, including the new LC 500 two-door coupe, the boat has a top speed of about 80 kilometers per hour.

The mass production model will be larger at roughly 18 meters. Toyota did not announce a release date or price details.

Toyota began making boats in 1997 and has sold around 850 vessels in Japan. Other luxury automakers including Aston Martin and Mercedes-Benz have also entered the boat market.
