Mai Mihara placed second with the highest ever Japanese score in the women's free skate and overnight leader Japan won the World Team Trophy for the second time on Saturday.

The 17-year-old Mihara, the Four Continents champion, scored 146.71 points in the free and Wakaba Higuchi came third with 145.30, helping Japan clinch the title for the first time in three events with 109 points. Russia finished second with 105 and the United States placed third with 97.

"I was nervous but skated feeling happy," said Mihara. "I am delighted (about the Japanese record in the free) and I want to make use of this experience and become an even stronger skater."

Higuchi said, "I gave it everything I had right until the end and feel really relieved. I was aiming for (a personal best of) 145 points. I scored even higher than that so next I am going to target 150."

Russia's Evgenia Medvedeva rewrote her world record in the women's free skate with 160.46. Her score combined with the short program of 241.31 was also a new world high for the 17-year-old.

In the pairs free program, Japan's Sumire Suto and Francis Boudreau-Audet were sixth with 97.57.

Teams ranked 1 to 6 in the ISU World Team Standings qualified for the World Team Trophy.

Each team is composed of eight skaters. Two men and two women compete in singles with one pair and one ice dance couple also skating. Standings are calculated according to the sum of the team points achieved in each phase of the event.
