The Tokyo Olympic Games torch relay may be drastically reduced in scale in response to the coronavirus pandemic, sources familiar with the matter said Monday.

After reviewing existing plans, the organizers determined they may run counter to government recommendations to refrain from holding large-scale events to prevent the spread of the pneumonia-causing virus.

The organizers are considering canceling the participation of members of the public in the relay, scheduled to begin Thursday in Fukushima Prefecture.

Under a revised plan, the Olympic flame is expected to be carried by car and placed on display upon reaching its destination point each day.

The organizers would review whether to continue with the modified arrangements after about a month.
