The International Association of Athletics Federations is considering a plan to hold the 2020 Olympic men's and women's marathons on the same day, as organizers work out the details of moving the five road races from Tokyo to Sapporo, Japan's athletics body said Thursday.

According to the Japan Association of Athletics Federations, two proposals were put forward on Wednesday night after the start of a three-day International Olympic Committee Coordination Commission meeting with the Tokyo organizing committee which is largely focused on dealing with the controversial move of the events to the city in northern Japan.

(Runners compete in a marathon race in Sapporo on Aug. 26, 2018.)

One proposal would see the men's and women's 20-kilometer race walks held on Aug. 7, the men's 50-km race walk on Aug. 8 and the men's and women's marathons held on Aug. 9.

The second proposal is for the events to be held from July 27-29 or July 28-30 with no fixed schedule as of yet.

The proposals would avoid a schedule conflict with the other athletics events, which are slated to begin on July 31 at Tokyo's National Stadium.

The IAAF hopes to learn which proposal its member associations prefer sometime Thursday.

A JAAF official said, "We need some time to chew over the details. There are operational challenges."
