U.S. President Donald Trump has stirred controversy with provocative rhetoric since taking office in January 2017, often causing friction with news media and other nations as well as disturbing political stability in Washington.

Trump, a businessman and TV personality before becoming president, has more than 61 million followers on Twitter, his preferred means of unfiltered communicating with the U.S. people. He recently officially kicked off his 2020 re-election campaign.

A Republican, Trump has repeatedly lambasted the media for publishing what he calls "fake news" when coverage is not as positive as he would like, while also sometimes engaging in verbal spats with the political leaders of other countries.

Trump became the first sitting U.S. leader to meet a North Korean leader last year.

At the historic meeting in Singapore in June 2018, Trump agreed with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un that Washington would provide security guarantees to Pyongyang in return for "complete denuclearization" of the Korean Peninsula.

But in February, Trump and Kim failed to strike a deal at their second summit in Hanoi due largely to disagreements over the scope of denuclearization and the level of sanctions relief to be granted.

Trump, however, expressed his readiness to continue talks with Kim. That willingness translated Sunday into their third meeting, in the Demilitarized Zone on the border of the two Koreas, during Trump's trip to South Korea.

After graduating from the University of Pennsylvania's business school, Trump, whose grandfather was an immigrant from Germany, took over his father's real estate business.

Trump's company built and renovated skyscrapers, hotels and golf courses across the globe, making him a billionaire along the way. He won a surprise victory over Hillary Clinton in the 2016 presidential election.

The president is an avid golfer who often uses the game to conduct business. He is a non-smoker who loves fast food but abstains from alcohol, preferring to drink Diet Coke, reportedly going through 12 cans a day.

During the 2016 presidential election campaign, Trump said that if Kim visited the United States, instead of a costly state dinner they would eat "a hamburger on a conference table."
