Japan's Tomoa Narasaki and Akiyo Noguchi both kicked off their Tokyo 2020 Olympic campaigns with silver medals at the bouldering World Cup opener on Saturday.

Narasaki completed three out of four problems in the first of six bouldering events of the season and finished second behind the Czech Republic's Adam Ondra.

"My body moved well throughout the qualifier, semifinals and finals," said Narasaki, who won men's silver in Meiringen for the second straight year.

"The last problem was pretty unique. I wasn't able to win the gold but overall it wasn't bad."

Japan's Rei Sugimoto took third, while Kokoro Fujii and Tomoaki Takata placed fourth and sixth, respectively.

In the women's event, Noguchi finished with three tops but settled for silver on attempts as Slovenia's Janja Garnbret claimed gold. Britain's Shauna Coxsey rounded out the podium in third.

"It's frustrating. I felt like I was thinking too much on the second and third problems," said Noguchi, who improved on her third-place finish from last year.

"It was the first event (of the World Cup season), so I haven't quite aligned with my competitive sense yet."

Japan's Miho Nonaka, who won the opener in Meiringen last year and finished second in each of the six remaining World Cup events, did not compete due to a left shoulder injury.

The bouldering World Cup season continues next weekend in Moscow.
