Los Angeles Angels two-way star Shohei Ohtani departed Japan for the U.S. on Monday after a two-month stay in his home country.

Dressed casually in a dark jacket and jeans, the 24-year-old Ohtani boarded a flight for Los Angeles from Narita airport without speaking to media at the boarding gate.

The hard-throwing American League rookie of the year had been back in Japan after undergoing offseason Tommy John surgery to repair ligament damage in his throwing elbow that will limit him to batting next season and likely keep him off the mound until 2020.

The Angels' pitchers and catchers will report to camp in Arizona on Feb. 13 and the remaining players will follow for full-fledged practice on Feb. 18.

Ohtani joined the Angels from the Nippon Ham Fighters of Japan's Pacific League via the posting system. He finished last year with 22 homers as a hitter and 63 strikeouts as a pitcher. On the mound, he went 4-2 with a 3.31 ERA in 10 starts.

At the plate, he hit .285 with 61 RBIs and stole 10 bases in 104 games for the Angels, who finished fourth in the AL West with 80 wins and 82 losses.
