An official announcement will soon be made on the transfer of Japan goalkeeper Shuichi Gonda from Sagan Tosu to Portuguese first-division side Portimonense, sources said Monday.

The custodian revealed the move was under negotiation prior to the AFC Asian Cup in the United Arab Emirates, where he has started four of the Samurai Blue's five matches ahead of their semifinal against Iran on Monday.

The 29-year-old played most of his career with FC Tokyo, where he debuted as a professional in 2007. He made a short move on loan to Austrian side SV Horn in 2016 before joining J-League first-division side Sagan on a free transfer at the start of 2017.

Portimonense are currently eighth in the 18-team Primeira Liga. The club is also home to Japan playmaker Shoya Nakajima, who pulled out of the squad for the Jan. 5 to Feb. 1 Asian Cup due to a leg injury.

Gonda earned his first Japan cap in 2010 but spent several years in the international wilderness until he was brought back into the Samurai Blue fold by manager Hajime Moriyasu following last summer's World Cup.
