An Olympic flame cauldron will be installed for the 2020 Tokyo Games in the city's waterfront, sources said Tuesday.

The cauldron will be placed near the "Yume no Ohashi" (great bridge of dreams) connecting the Ariake district with the Odaiba artificial island in Tokyo Bay.

The area is also the site of the so-called "Urban Cluster" hosting youth-oriented events such as sports climbing, skateboarding and three-on-three basketball.

Unlike previous games, Tokyo 2020 will not have an "Olympic Park," with organizers hoping the Urban Cluster will become a focal point for crowds.

A cauldron will also be temporarily installed at the new National Stadium for opening and closing ceremonies, but the lack of space at the arena, which was redesigned amid an outcry over cost blowouts, apparently prompted the use of a second, permanent site.

The plan is expected to be officially announced next week at a meeting of the organizing committee, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government and the central government.

The use of two separate cauldrons has a precedent, with the Rio de Janeiro Games in 2016 also placing the Olympic flame at a second location near the city's waterfront.
