The PGA Tour said Tuesday it will hold its first tournament in Japan next year under a six-year sponsorship deal with Japanese clothing shopping business company Zozo Inc.

The inaugural Zozo Championship, which will be co-sanctioned with the Japanese tour, will be contested on Oct. 24-27 at the Narashino Country Club in Chiba Prefecture, near Tokyo.

The 78-player field will compete for $9.75 million in prize money, the highest in any golf tournament held in Japan.

Zozo is run by Yusaku Maezawa, who is set to become the first private passenger to orbit the moon in a spaceship developed by SpaceX, the space transportation firm of U.S. tech billionaire Elon Musk.

"I wanted to do something that nobody has even done before," Maezawa told a press conference in Tokyo. "The first priority is to raise the recognition (of the company) in the world."

Hideki Matsuyama, who has claimed five wins on the PGA Tour, said he is looking forward to playing on home soil.

"I want to play in front of my Japanese fans and show my appreciation to them."
