The second round of high-level trade talks between Tokyo and Washington will be postponed to Tuesday at the request of the U.S. side, Japan's state minister in charge of the meeting said Monday.

Toshimitsu Motegi, Japan's economic revitalization minister, told reporters that the schedule change will not affect plans to lay the groundwork for a Wednesday summit between Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and U.S. President Donald Trump.

"We were told (from the U.S. side) that they won't be able to make time today in today's tight schedule and they want to do it tomorrow morning," Motegi told reporters.

Motegi and U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer were scheduled to meet on Monday.

Trade is one of the major agenda items for the upcoming summit as Trump, who has taken issue with his country's massive trade deficit with Japan, has been seeking a "reciprocal" relationship.

Abe said Sunday he had a "very constructive" discussion on bilateral trade and investment with Trump over dinner.
