Japan's Rio Olympic silver medalist men's 4x100-meter sprint foursome showed on Thursday it has not lost a step by winning the Asian Games title with ease.

Running a 38.16-second time, the team of 100 bronze medalist Ryota Yamagata, Shuhei Tada, Yoshihide Kiryu and Asuka Cambridge led home silver medalists Indonesia and bronze winners China for Japan's first Asian Games gold in the event in 20 years.

"We were aiming for the title, so I am really pleased to have won a gold medal," said Yamagata. "But it was a little disappointing that we could not achieve a time in the 37-second range as we were targeting."

Cambridge said the team's performance was "not bad" and that he is happy they got what they came to Indonesia for.

"As the relay went well, I've come to think that I also want to become stronger, individually," said Cambridge, who bombed out of the men's 100 at the semifinal stage.

Despite being 0.56 second off the time that saw the team, with Shota Iizuka in place of Tada, win silver behind Jamaican legend Usain Bolt and friends in Rio, it was more than enough for gold in Jakarta.

Indonesia crossed 0.61 second behind Japan, with China 0.73 off the pace.

In the preceding women's 4x100, Bahrain won gold in a games record 42.73, overhauling silver medalist China in the final straight. Kazakhstan won bronze, while Japan finished fifth behind Thailand.

In the women's 4x400 event, Japan ran a season's best time to finish fifth with India winning in 3:28.72.

The 4x100 athletics gold was Japan's second on Thursday following Hayato Katsuki's come-from-behind win in the men's 50-kilometer walk in the morning.
