ANA Holdings Inc. said Tuesday it will cancel 378 domestic flights in August due to Rolls-Royce engine inspections, less than the previous month's 619 due to steps such as the leasing of engines.

ANA affiliate airline companies Star Flyer Inc. and Solaseed Air Inc. also decided to operate 226 additional flights to cover part of the cancellations, the Japanese airline said, adding that the call-offs will be limited to six to 11 flights a day during the busy Bon holidays between Aug. 10 and 19.

The cancellations of the flights in August, connecting Tokyo's Haneda airport with six other domestic airports, will affect around 44,000 people, it said.

ANA was forced to make the cancellations to inspect Rolls-Royce engines on Boeing 787 aircraft under the instruction from the Japanese transport ministry, as an apparent design flaw might cause cracks in a rotor blade.

The cancellations are expected to continue in September. ANA will also review its flight schedule covering the end of October to the end of next March, which is due to be announced at the end of August.

"While we remain focused on minimizing disruption over this holiday period we are also committed to entirely eliminating the issue as soon as possible," Chris Cholerton, president of Civil Aerospace at Rolls-Royce Holdings plc, said in a statement.

"(We) are now in the final stages of testing redesigned parts this year to enable the introduction of a permanent solution for ANA and all other Trent 1000 customers," Cholerton said, referring to the name of the engine subject to inspections.
