Mixed teams of North and South Korean basketball players had friendly matches in Pyongyang on Wednesday.

Male and female players each had a match in which they were divided into two teams named "peace" and "prosperity."

The two male teams tied, while the "prosperity" team of female players won by 103 to 102 over the "peace" team of the same.

The two-day event will continue Thursday.

South Korea's Unification Minister Cho Myung Gyun, in a speech at the outset of event, said "the fruit of these basketball matches will lead to good results in upcoming Asian Games in August and also another friendly match in Seoul slated for September."

Attention was focused on Wednesday's event as the two Koreas are to form a unified team for female basketball at the Asian Games.

The unified team's South Korean coach Lee Moon Kyu said it will put in a lot of effort to play as one Korean team.

For this week's event in Pyongyang, South Korean players, accompanied by government officials and reporters, arrived on Tuesday and will return home on Friday.

The event was proposed by North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, reputed to be an avid basketball fan, at his historic summit on April 27 with South Korean President Moon Jae In.
