Craftworkers in Kyoto have created a huge Nishijin fabric that features a character of Leiji Matsumoto's popular anime series "Galaxy Express 999."

The fabric measures about 2.6 meters in length and 1.3 m in width. Tomiya Textile Corp. used more than 110,000 threads in 15 colors to weave Maetel, a mysterious woman in the series, enjoying sightseeing in Japan's ancient capital.

The work will be displayed during an exhibition starting Thursday, along with other fabrics and block prints also featuring characters from Matsumoto's anime and manga series, including "Space Pirate Captain Herlock."

The exhibition runs through Sunday at the Nishijin Textile Center with free admission.
