Shohei Ohtani had his second straight two-hit game Friday as the Los Angeles Angels beat the Seattle Mariners 5-0 in the opener of a three-game series at Safeco Field.

After singling off Mariners starter Mike Leake (3-3) and coming around to score in a two-run fourth inning, Ohtani doubled to deep left in his next at-bat in the fifth to score Justin Upton and advance Albert Pujols to third.

Pujols had reached on a single to right, becoming the 32nd member of the 3,000-hit club, drawing a huge ovation from the Seattle crowd.

Those cheers turned to boos when Ohtani was announced. Seattle had been one of seven teams the 23-year-old met with last December before he settled on the Angels. For a popular player in Japan, where fans rarely boo, the crowd's reception was an eye-opener.

"That was a weird feeling, since I hadn't really experienced that," said Ohtani.

Ohtani struck out swinging, earning Leake loud applause from the home crowd. Ohtani also drew a walk and grounded out in his other plate appearances.

"It was a good game overall and I'm glad we were able to win," Ohtani said. "I've been able to swing well in every at-bat so I hope to keep this up."

Garrett Richards (4-1) set the pace by throwing 6-2/3 effective innings and combined with two pitchers on five-hit ball.

At Great American Ball Park, Junichi Tazawa allowed two hits in a scoreless eighth in the Miami Marlins' 4-1 defeat to the Cincinnati Reds, who took an early lead and never looked back.

Eugenio Suarez and Adam Duvall hit back-to-back homers, both off former Chunichi Dragons lefty Chen Wei-yin (1-1) in a four-run first.
