North Korean leader Kim Jong Un sent a consolation message to Chinese President Xi Jinping following a tour bus accident that killed more than 30 Chinese tourists in North Korea, state-run media reported Thursday.

"It is, indeed, very sad that the close Chinese friends...met with an unexpected accident on our land," Kim was quoted by the Korean Central News Agency as saying in the message sent to Xi on Wednesday.

"We make a deep apology to the Chinese comrades for the pain which cannot be alleviated with any word, consolation and compensation," Kim added.

Kim also visited Pyongyang Railway Station on Wednesday night to see off a special train carrying the Chinese victims of the accident, including the bodies of the dead, KCNA reported.

On Sunday evening, a tour bus toppled off a bridge in the southwestern province of North Hwanghae, killing 32 Chinese citizens and four North Koreans and injuring two other Chinese, the Chinese Foreign Ministry said.
