Japanese author Kanae Minato's "Penance" missed out on the 2018 Edgar Allan Poe Award for best paperback original novel, with the award going to "The Unseeing" by Anna Mazzola, the Mystery Writers of America said Thursday.

The prestigious award is sometimes dubbed the Academy Award for mystery works. The 2018 awards honor the best in mystery fiction, nonfiction and television published or produced in 2017.

Two other Japanese mystery writers, Natsuo Kirino and Keigo Higashino, were nominated for the Edgar Award for best novel in 2004 and 2012, respectively, but also missed out.
