When the coach of Fiji's Rio Olympic gold medal-winning team talks about "two pieces of individual brilliance," rest assured he is describing something special.

Portia Woodman's 171st career try, and 29th of the season, and Tyla Nathan-Wong's effort a minute from time allowed the New Zealand women to beat France 24-12 on Sunday at the Kitakyushu Sevens, leading Ben Ryan to praise the two Black Ferns on Twitter.

And Japanese fans might just get to see more of that brilliance from Woodman in the future.

"There's potential," the 26-year-old Sevens World Cup and Women's Rugby World Cup winner told Kyodo News of a move here at some stage in the future.

"It's awesome that there is an option for women's rugby to seek careers outside of home. There are countries that are offering professional contracts now such as Japan. So it is definitely a possibility. We shall see."

If such a move were to come off, it would be a win-win situation for all concerned.

Twenty-five minutes after an exhausting semifinal against Australia, and with only so much time to prepare for the final, Woodman -- who was World Rugby Women's Player of the Year in 2017 and an Olympic silver medalist at Rio 2016 -- was still out on the field taking selfies with the fans.

"There is a lot of support in Japan," she explained. "They are people here that absolutely love rugby and they love the black jersey. And they are out there in full support for women's rugby and it's such an awesome feeling."

"The language barrier doesn't matter. Everyone just wants a photo and to touch you. It's such an awesome vibe. I love coming to Japan."

The 17-12 semifinal win over the Australians saw New Zealand close the gap at the top of the World Rugby Women's Sevens Series and came just a week after the sides met in the final of the Commonwealth Games on Australia's Gold Coast.

"It was hard. When you win a gold you can taper off and lose focus and think you have already achieved what you wanted to achieve. But we were 'No, we still have more to achieve this year.' We want to take out the World Series and we still have to work to do towards that."

The Black Ferns trailed 12-0 at the break but fought back, only to have to repeat the act in the final when France pulled level at 12-12.

"It was like playing two finals in a row. France bring it every time. They are such a physical side and pressure us in every aspect. It was an awesome final and skillset wise an awesome game."

"We just looked at each other in the eye and said 'Do we want this? We've got it.'"

And as for the praise from Ryan?

"You're kidding," she said before turning the praise to her teammates. "I think they do quite a bit on the inside. They create so much space for me out wide."
