Japanese chef Hiromitsu Harada, who gained fame in Indonesia through his fun-cooking television shows, died in a hospital in Depok, near Jakarta, early Monday, his daughter said. He was 56.

Ayumi Harada said on social media that her father had been sick but offered no other details, citing family privacy.

Born in Aomori Prefecture in Japan's northeast on May 29, 1961, Harada became well-known in Indonesia through his shows on some private broadcasters in which he taught how to cook Japanese food in fun ways.

He is considered to have greatly contributed to the introduction of Japanese cuisine to Indonesia.

The chef, who is survived by his Indonesian wife and two adult children, had been living in Indonesia since 1987.

Harada was known for his catchphrase "Ibu-ibu, masak yuk!" (Mothers, let's cook).
