Japan's Haruna Matsumoto booked her spot in the Pyeongchang Olympic women's snowboarding halfpipe final after placing third in qualifying Monday.

Matsumoto will be joined in Tuesday's final at Phoenix Snow Park by Japanese compatriot Sena Tomita, who qualified seventh in a field of 24. The top 12 advanced to the final.

"I got a better score than I expected so I'm surprised. In the final I want to make sure I don't have even minor mistakes on my landings," said Matsumoto. "I hope to demonstrate all the efforts I have put into this competition."

Two other Japanese, Kurumi Imai and Hikaru Oe, missed the cut after finishing 15th and 17th, respectively.

Matsumoto was solid in both runs on Monday, scoring 80.75 points in the first and nailing it in the second for 84.25. Tomita went through with a 66.75 in her second attempt.

"I was more nervous than usual and really didn't know how things would turn out but I am glad I was able to turn in a solid performance. For now, I have done all that I can do," Tomita said.

American Kelly Clark, who is hoping to become the first snowboarder to win a medal at four Winter Olympics, eked into the final after qualifying in 11th place.
