The Russian Olympic Committee athletes' commission decided unanimously Monday to support the participation of individual athletes at the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics next February.

"Most athletes want to take part in the Olympics, and we support it," said Rio Olympic fencing team gold medalist Sofya Velikaya, chair of the athletes' commission.

"We ask for respect and understanding for everyone," she was quoted as saying by Russian news agency TASS.

Last Tuesday, the International Olympic Committee banned Russia from competing at Pyeongchang over state-sponsored doping at the 2014 Sochi Olympics, but will allow athletes from the country to compete as individuals if they pass strict scrutiny.

However, they would not be able to use their national flag or anthem during the games, and their uniform would bear the name "Olympic Athlete from Russia."

After Russian President Vladimir Putin ended the prospect of a boycott of Pyeongchang by saying the country's authorities would allow participation of individual athletes under a neutral flag, many sports organizations have begun to announce their participation in the games.

According to Velikaya, no athletes so far have declared their refusal to participate.

The athlete's commission has also prepared a request to IOC president Thomas Bach to review the decision to prohibit use of the Russian flag and national anthem, as well as the permanent ban of Russian athletes involved in the doping scandal from future Olympics.

The decision will be finalized by the ROC on Tuesday.
