A magnitude-7.0 earthquake struck Monday off the northeastern coast of New Caledonia in the southern Pacific, triggering small tsunamis in the French overseas territory and neighboring Vanuatu.

The 9:43 a.m. quake originated roughly 86 kilometers east-northeast of Tadine on Mare Island in the Loyalty Islands at a depth of 10 km, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii said tsunami activity was observed in four locations around New Caledonia, with the highest waves reaching 37 centimeters above tide levels in Ouinne, in the southeast of the territory's main island.

Vanuatu also experienced a 22 cm tsunami in Lenakel, on the southern island of Tanna.

According to the tsunami warning center, minor sea level fluctuations may continue over the next few hours.
