A military officer in President Rodrigo Duterte's personal protection team was found dead Tuesday morning in his quarters at the president's official residence compound, the head of the security team said.

Brig. Gen. Lope Dagoy, commander of the Presidential Security Group, told reporters there were no signs of foul play when the body of Maj. Harim Gonzaga, 37, was found with a gunshot wound to his chest by his wife at around 8:50 a.m. inside their quarters at Malacanang Park.

"We really cannot speculate. It's hard to say if it's a suicide case, when we do not have all the data to conclude (as such). It can also be an accident. We leave it up to the (the police)," Dagoy said.

Gonzaga belonged to the operations section of the Presidential Security Group, which takes charge of all their personnel's movements, according to Dagoy.

Dagoy said he presumed Duterte was at the "Bahay Pangarap" (House of Dreams), located within the same compound but quite distant from where the shooting happened.

"I only informed the special assistant of the president, Secretary Bong Go, of the incident. So, he might have relayed it already to the president at this time," Dagoy said.

Duterte, who usually spends the weekends in his home city of Davao on Mindanao island, is scheduled to attend the 120th anniversary celebration of the Department of Justice and the 56th anniversary of the Philippine Constitution Association on Tuesday evening in separate venues in Manila. He had no public activity on Monday.

Dagoy quoted Gonzaga's wife, who is also a member of the presidential security escort, to have said that the family had no problems or issues.

Dagoy said aside from his wife, Gonzaga is survived by his two children.
