Japan's Keiichiro Korenaga and Yuki Hada won the gold and silver medals, respectively, in the men's lead competition in sport climbing at the World Games on Sunday.

Korenaga, 21, and Hada, 20, led their country to finish on top of the medal standings for sport climbing with two golds and two silvers -- Yoshiyuki Ogata winning the men's bouldering final and Miho Nonaka ending runner-up in women's bouldering earlier in the games.

Sport climbing is a new sport added to the program for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, where athletes will compete based on the overall scores from three disciplines -- bouldering involving how many routes a contestant can complete, lead which is a height competition and speed climbing.

In Sunday's lead final for men, Korenaga survived a scare when he hit his face on the wall as he lunged for the next hold with both hands.

"That was really painful. I almost fell but held on tight," said Korenaga, whose face was bleeding after the competition. "Bouldering is becoming popular in Japan, but I hope more people will pay attention to the lead competition as well."

Hada, a fellow Nippon Sport Science University student, also noted that there are many strong Japanese athletes not just in bouldering but also in lead climbing.

"The younger players are also training hard and we're working together to improve through friendly rivalry," he said.
