The Japanese gymnast pair of Takato Nakazono and Yamato Ishikawa took advantage of a slip-up by Russia to win bronze in the men's synchronized trampoline at the World Games on Monday.

Gymnastics: Japan wins bronze in synchro trampoline at World Games

While China claimed gold and Ukraine silver, Nakazono and Ishikawa, both 18-year-olds making their international senior debuts, collected a total of 50.550 points for difficulty, execution and synchronization with no penalty deduction at Centennial Hall.

The Russian pair of Dmitrii Ushakov and Andrey Yudin, who qualified for the eight-team final with the best score, performed last but could only finish seventh after an interrupted routine.

"I can't believe it. To be honest I didn't think we'd be able to win a medal. We were representing Japan but it was good that we weren't able to put too much pressure on ourselves," said Ishikawa.

"It was my first senior event and I was nervous, but we performed well. I'm glad that results followed. I'm proud of our efforts," said Nakazono.

Trampoline gymnastics consists of four events -- individual trampoline, synchronized trampoline, double mini trampoline and tumbling. Individual trampoline is an Olympic sport, but synchronized trampoline is not.

Elsewhere for Japan in the July 20-30 multi-sport event, powerlifting athlete Yukako Fukushima won silver in the women's lightweight.
