One woman fell into a coma and 13 others were injured Wednesday evening after a passenger boat rammed into a Kobe Airport structure in Hyogo Prefecture in western Japan, firefighters said.

There were both light and serious injuries sustained in the accident, according to the 5th Regional Coast Guard Headquarters in Kobe and firefighters. The 84-ton ship was en route from Kansai International Airport in neighboring Osaka Prefecture to Kobe Airport.

The operator of the ferry service quoted the captain as saying the collision occurred after he lost his bearings. The president of the company offered apologies to the passengers.

Firefighters said one of the passengers alerted them about the accident, in which the ship collided with a guiding light structure of the airport on a man-made island located in the northwestern part of Osaka Bay at around 9:30 p.m.

The ferry service, dubbed Bay Shuttle, is a 30-minute, one-way ride.
