Nintendo Co. said Tuesday it will start selling a palm-sized version of its hugely successful Super Famicom game console, originally launched in 1990, in Japan on Oct. 5.

The "Nintendo Classic Mini: Super Famicom" is preloaded with 21 titles including the immensely popular "Super Mario World" and "The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past" as well as the previously unreleased "Star Fox 2."

Its suggested retail price is set at 8,618 yen ($77), including tax, with an AC adapter to be sold separately at 1,080 yen.

The Kyoto-based company will launch the recreated console in Europe and the United States on Sept. 29 and in Australia on Sept. 30 prior to its launch in the domestic market.

While being offered in a smaller size, it includes controllers recreated with the same size and button layout as for the original console.

The reproduction of the Super Famicom, sold overseas as Super NES, comes in response to strong requests from game fans for its recreation after the revival last November of Nintendo's "Family Computer" console, which debuted in 1983 and is known as Nintendo Entertainment System outside Japan.

The compact Family Computer came out also in palm size and as Nintendo Classic Mini in Europe and NES Classic Edition in the United States. It received an enthusiastic response, selling about 2.3 million units in Japan, Australia, Europe and the United States by March and its production was temporarily halted in April.
