Japan's Yuichi Sugita and Misaki Doi were both defeated in their first-round matches on the second day of action at the French Open on Monday.

Sugita fought hard over two days after his match was suspended overnight because of darkness, but failed to win his first ever Grand Slam match, going down 6-3, 6-3, 6-7(4), 6-7(3), 6-3 to Steve Johnson of the United States.

"I rushed my game, forced myself to make mistakes and lost," said Sugita, who rallied from two sets down to win the third set and had a 4-2 lead in the fourth when play was suspended.

"My opponent is better than me when it comes to winning strategy. (My style of) taking risks and being aggressive does work at times. Today's match -- the way I attacked him on red clay where the ball is slower -- is a big plus for me."

Sugita fought off match point against the 25th seed and won the fourth-set tiebreaker, but allowed his opponent to convert the first break opportunity in the third game of the fifth set, turning the tide his way.

The 28-year-old Sugita made his fourth appearance in a Grand Slam event, twice at Wimbledon and once at the Australian Open, but has never made it past the first round.

"I thought my fourth attempt would be different. I'm getting better for sure, but it's the little things that make the big difference. I'll have to focus on those," said Sugita.

In the women's singles, Doi fell to Sara Errani of Italy 7-6(7), 6-1 for her second straight first-round loss at the French Open.

"There was a huge burden on my legs because I couldn't put too much stress on my abdomen," said Doi, who withdrew from a tournament in Germany last week after injuring her abdominal muscles.

"There's a part of me that feels I could have won if I was in better physical condition. My game is getting better so it's frustrating."

Doi made only 48 percent of her first serves in the second set when she also allowed Errani to break all four of her service games, and requested a medical time out because of leg cramps. She made 47 unforced errors compared to Errani's 12.

Elsewhere, defending champion Novak Djokovic of Serbia and nine-time champion Rafael Nadal of Spain safely advanced to the second round.

Japan's Kei Nishikori plays his opener against Thanasi Kokkinakis of Australia as the eighth seed on Tuesday.
