The Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ, one of Japan's biggest banks, will shorten its name 11 years after its creation through a merger, people familiar with the matter said Sunday.

The bank, a core unit of Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group Inc., is expected to soon announce the change of its English name to MUFG Bank and the Japanese name to the Bank of Mitsubishi UFJ, they said.

The expected decision will come as some clients have been telling the bank that the name is too long.

The bank was created from the merger of Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi and UFJ Bank in 2006.

Mitsubishi Bank and the Bank of Tokyo merged in 1996 to create the Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi.
